There’s nothing worse than a lousy Wi-Fi signal in your home. Despite all the technological advances, it might feel like nothing can solve the problem of a dead Wi-Fi spot. If you have problematic Wi-Fi, here are a few things that might help improve the signal.

For Personal Tech Media, this is Two Minute Tech. I’m Jim Herman.

First, consider the router’s placement. Generally it’s best to place the router on the highest level of your home and as close to the center as possible. That way, you’ll get the best distribution of the signal.

Second, check the power settings on your router. You’ll need to use a web browser to access the router’s software controls. If you have dead spots in your home and the power isn’t all the way up, give the power a slight boost.

Third, consider the construction around the dead spot. If your flooring has concrete or metal layers, that could be part of the problem. Appliances, metal decorations, and bookshelves can all impact signal strength.

Fourth, consider the age of your router. If your router is over a few years old, try upgrading it. Faster Wi-Fi standards come out every few years, so you may benefit from a newer device. However, make sure you purchase a quality device. Skimping on the cost probably isn’t going to help your speed.

And fifth, if you’ve tried everything and still can’t get Wi-Fi to one pesky area, consider purchasing a range extender. A range extender will help you reach areas that for whatever reason, your router isn’t able to reach.
