We’re fortunate to live in an age where technology is abundant and cheap. But the unfortunate side effect is that sometimes we just trash our old devices. However, you don’t have to dispose of those devices. You can still put them to use. Today, we begin a two-part series on how to reuse your old tech.

For Personal Tech Media, this is Two Minute Tech. I’m Jim Herman.

For today’s episode, we’ll discuss some ways that you can repurpose a computer. And tomorrow, we’ll discuss what you can do with an old phone or tablet.

If you have an old computer, you can use it for added storage space. The hard drive and other components on the computer often still work fine, and you can set up the computer similar to a network storage device.

Along the same line, you could also use that computer to host a media server. Create copies of your movies, music, and more, and stream it from any of your devices.

Third, you could also set it up as a second computer for experimentation. You could also get a KVM switch to jump between your two computers using the same monitor and other peripherals.

If you’re into gaming, you could also use that computer as a game server for your favorite game, or install an older operating system and run classic games. A few years back, I was able to download a copy of an old SimCity version and relive my middle school computer lab days.

And finally, even if the computer isn’t working, you could still salvage some of the parts and use them on your current computer. When I replaced my previous computer, I took some of the working pieces in order to get a different computer working again.
