It’s never a good feeling to realize your phone is missing. However, phones are high-value targets for thieves. A thief could sell your phone for hundreds of dollars, and the data on your phone could be even more valuable. Here are five tricks a thief might use to snatch your phone.

For Personal Tech Media, this is Two Minute Tech. I’m Jim Herman.

First, a thief could offer to take a picture for you. You unlock your device and hand it over to the friendly, helpful person, only to watch that person run off with your phone.

Second, a thief could grab your phone while you’re holding it. You could be walking down the road focused on the phone, and someone walking the other way could snatch it right out of your hand. If you’re walking next to the road, someone could grab it while riding a bike or quickly jump into a car for a fast escape.

Third, a thief could pretend to be stranded with a dead phone or claim that their phone is lost. You hand the person your phone to call for help, and while using your device, the person disappears with your phone. The thief might even enlist the help of someone else to distract you to assist in the getaway.

Fourth, a thief could snatch your phone from your bag or even cut the bag open and grab it. In this case, the thief has probably watched you put your phone back in your bag and knows precisely where to go to get it.

And fifth, a thief could pickpocket a phone just like they might pickpocket a wallet. Be careful any time you’re in a crowded public area and stay extra vigilant any time someone gets close to you.
