Bullying and harassment happen all over social media today. Despite their best efforts to stop it, social sites have found it difficult to do much more than just respond to reports of problems. Today, we will discuss steps that you can take to curb harassment on Facebook and Instagram.
For Personal Tech Media, this is Two Minute Tech. I’m Jim Herman.
First, complete the privacy checkup and look through your privacy settings. The privacy checkup is like a tour through privacy settings, highlighting the most impactful choices. However, don’t stop there. Make sure to check the other privacy settings so that you know everything is tweaked the way you want. Facebook and Instagram tend to be more private than Twitter, so adjusting these settings can have a significant impact on your privacy.
Second, don’t be afraid to use the block, unfollow, and unfriend features. These features are specifically intended to deal with harassment. If the harassment is coming from one specific person, hopefully blocking that person will stop it.
Third, if the harassment relates to a particular subject, such as your religion, race, or sexual orientation, set up a list of blocked words. You can block up to 1,000 words from appearing in comments on your profile. Each term that you list will also include common variations, such as misspellings, plurals, and abbreviations.
Fourth, make sure that you have filtering turned on for direct messages. Since direct messages are intended to be private, the company wants you to grant permission before it scans your inbox.
