Websites make it very easy to sign up for their services. Click on a link, answer some questions, provide some personal details, and you’re in. But if you want to cancel or delete your account, you’ll often find it’s much more difficult. However, one website can help you find exactly how to delete your account.
For Personal Tech Media, this is Two Minute Tech. I’m Jim Herman.
If you’re signing up for a service or giving your information to a company, they usually make it very easy. But of course, these companies don’t want you to cancel or delete your account, so some make that process much more challenging. The exact process is often unclear, you may have to decline special offers, and instruction pages are usually buried. In fact, Amazon is facing government action for making it difficult to cancel Prime subscriptions.
But fortunately, one website makes deleting your accounts much more straightforward. The site JustDeleteMe, available at justdelete.me, has assembled a library of links to help pages that tell you how to delete your account. If you use a browser based on Google Chrome, you can also install a Chrome extension that will take you to that page for whatever site you’re currently on.
JustDeleteMe also rates websites based on how easily you’ll be able to delete your data. It ranks sites as easy (which means it’s a simple process), medium (which means there’s extra steps involved), hard (which usually involves contacting customer service), or impossible (which means you cannot delete the data). So before you sign up for an account, you can see how difficult it will be to wipe out your data if you decide to cancel.
